The city of Greenbelt is a suburb of Washington, D.C. It is located within Prince George's County and close to the Capital Beltway, the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, I-95 and the Greenbelt Metro. Greenbelt residents enjoy speedy access to employment centers throughout the area, including the Goddard Space Center of NASA, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Research Center in Beltsville, and the University of Maryland. The original housing of Greenbelt was a planned community, now operated by a cooperative offering residents low-cost townhouse living. There is also a wide variety of other housing located throughout the city. Cultural and recreational facilities abound in Greenbelt. These include 2 recreation centers, a community center, an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, a fitness center, extensive ball fields, 23 playgrounds, 190 acres of parkland including the scenic Greenbelt Lake, and a major county branch library in the center of town. Many cultural and recreational facilities of the University of Maryland and the cities of DC, Baltimore and Annapolis are also easily accessible.
