College Park is the home of the University of Maryland and has a very historic past. U.S. Route 1, which runs through the center of the city, was constructed on the main north-south stagecoach route that existed in colonial times. This corridor is also the locationof the original Baltimore & Ohio Railroad line connecting Washington, D.C. and Baltimore. Rossborough Inn is the oldest building in the area. It was used as an inn in colonial times and is now part of the University of Maryland campus. It houses the Alumni Association and has a quaint restaurant that serves lunch weekdays and caters to wedding receptions and similar events on weekends. Another local attraction is the College Park Airport, the oldest continuously-operated airport in the nation. It lies on a site selected by the Wright brothers for early flight training. Locaated on the grounds of the airport iw a 27,000 square foot Aviation Museum. Situated on a 17-acre site at the northwest end of the campus is the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, a state of the art performing arts village comprised of 10 interconnected structures designed to serve the music, theatre and dance divisions of the University. It is a true center of performing arts for regional audiences and national and international professionals. College Park is a center of education and the performing arts and is conveniently located between Washington, DC and Baltimore.
